Australia's high court ruled unanimously that the federal government unlawfully detained non-citizen Safwat Abdel-Hady for 18 months, paving the way for potentially hundreds of detainees to seek compensation estimated in the tens of millions of dollars. The decision overturns the government's defense based on a 2004 precedent and follows a November 2023 landmark ruling that released hundreds of non-citizens who could not be deported.

Indefinite immigration detention was a very poor policy. I hope the defendants receive proper compensation.
In one case, the detainee was incarcerated for 9 years in a hotel room before finally being released. Extremely cruel policy.
