University of Iowa researchers have identified a previously unknown crocodile species, named Crocodylus lucivenator or "Lucy's hunter," that lived in Ethiopia 3.4 to 3 million years ago alongside the famous early human ancestor Lucy. The giant predator, measuring 12-15 feet long and weighing 600-1,300 pounds, was likely the ecosystem's apex predator and regularly hunted Lucy's species, Australopithecus afarensis.
