Construction of the new pumped hydro project in Queensland is due to start this year. The Borumba Dam power plant will have a capacity of 2,000 Megawatts and is planned to be completed by 2033.
The project is located near Imbil in the Gympie Region local government area in the Wide Bay-Burnett region.

Queensland Hydro is developing a long-duration pumped hydro energy storage project at Lake Borumba in Queensland's Somerset region to support the state's energy transition. The project, identified as viable over 40 years ago, is currently undergoing early works and technical investigations with a refreshed business case expected by mid-2026.
