About
Changelog
Every change in each Topicle app release.
iOS 1.3
New
- Topicle is in the share sheet. Share a link, some text or up to five photos from another app, pick a community, and post without leaving what you were doing. If the app is needed first, for example to sign in, Save for Topicle keeps your post waiting in the composer.
- Polls: add a poll to any post, with up to ten options. Choose how long it stays open and whether results show after voting or when it closes, and change your vote any time until the poll closes.
- In the feed, a poll with seven or more options shows the first few, and one tap opens the rest. In the Compact layout, a poll shows as a chip on the post's row. Tap it to open the poll right there.
- If you made the poll, you always see the vote counts, you can end it early, and you get a notification when it closes. Commenting on a poll? Turn on Show my vote and people see your pick next to your comment.
- A new sort, Active, puts threads with new replies at the top.
- When you come back to Topicle, posts you have already scrolled past on Home move further down, so there is something new at the top. A post with new replies keeps its place and nothing is hidden. Turn it off with Move seen posts down, under Settings > Content & feed.
- On a post with several images, swipe through them right in the thread, without opening the full-screen viewer first.
- Coming back to a thread shows what is new since your last visit: a header counts the new comments, New shows only those, and a button steps you through them one at a time.
- A Next comment button in threads jumps to the next top-level comment. Long press it to go back one.
- Tap anywhere on a comment to collapse it and its replies, and tap again to expand. Long press a comment for Select text. You can turn this off in Settings with Tap comment to collapse.
- Show people's location flags beside their names in threads, under Settings > Appearance. A post's menu also shows where its commenters are from.
- Reply to a comment straight from its notification, without opening the app.
- Customize your inbox: put a kind of notification in a folder at the top of Notifications, or hide it completely. Long-press a notification to choose, or go to Settings > Notifications > Customize Inbox.
- Upvote notifications for your posts and comments in private communities: open Upvoted by to see who, and mute them for any post or comment. Only you can see who upvoted you.
- React to a message: long-press it and pick an emoji. Tap a reaction to see who reacted.
- Reply to a particular message: swipe it, or long-press it and choose Reply. Your reply quotes it, and tapping the quote takes you back to the original.
- Swipe a conversation in Messages: right to mark it read, left to archive it, with Undo. Archived conversations are in the menu at the top of Messages.
- Topicle runs on both displays of iPhone Duo and adapts as you fold and unfold it. Unfolded, a list and a post sit side by side, and partly open, the split lines up with the fold.
- Turn your iPhone sideways and Topicle turns with it.
- New members get a short Get started list: upvote something and leave a comment, and if you like, edit your profile and make your first post.
- Opening the app for the first time can show a welcome with quick ways to sign up, or you can browse first. If you are not signed in, a Join tab and a card in the feed make joining one step away.
- Topicle is dressed up for Halloween until 2 November, with seasonal colours and a few decorations. Tap Turn off on its card, or switch off Seasonal themes in Settings.
- Moderators can schedule posts in their community, once or on a repeat such as every Monday, from Mod Tools.
- Community owners can change their community's name, once every 180 days. Links to the old name redirect to the new one for 12 months, and the community page shows the name it used to have.
- Community owners can choose whether their community's former names are shown. Turn off Show former names under Mod Tools > Settings > Community name, and the old name is removed from the community page and the public moderation log. With former names hidden, an owner can also stop the old address from redirecting.
- Moderators can now see who has posted or commented in their community, under Members in Mod Tools. If you'd rather not appear, turn off Show me in community member lists in Edit profile.
- Community descriptions support formatting: bold, italics, links, lists and spoilers. Moderators get a description editor with a preview, can pick a cover colour, and can upload an SVG or a transparent image as the community icon.
- Moderators can turn polls off for their community, let only members vote, set the longest a poll can run, and end a poll early.
- Video posts can now have their thumbnail cropped or replaced.
- If you create a community with a name very close to an existing one, those communities are shown first, so you can consider joining one instead.
- Blocked users in Settings has a Block a user row, like the other mute and block lists.
Improved
- Your Home feed, your feed sorts and your comment sort are saved to your account instead of only on this device. Make All your home feed: pick it in the Display options and Topicle opens on it every time.
- Your messages load instantly and conversations you have opened can be read offline. A message still sending when the app closed or the connection dropped goes out once you are back.
- A message you haven't sent yet is kept when you leave the conversation, and messages you send from another device appear in your open conversations straight away.
- Archiving a conversation hides it from your inbox only, not the other person's, and a new message brings it back.
- Messages, user pickers, search and moderator screens show people's real profile pictures. In a message thread, tap the name at the top to open their profile, and long-press a conversation in the inbox for its actions.
- Links in your own messages are underlined, so they stand out from the text.
- Comments are easier to read, with their lines set a little closer together and a clear gap between paragraphs.
- Opening a comment from a notification or a link marks it with a blue stripe that stays, instead of a brief flash.
- Crossposts take up less of the screen: the large embedded box is replaced by a short header saying where the post came from. Editing a crosspost changes only its title, flair and spoiler.
- In Search, swipe between the result tabs, and the search page shows Active discussions under your recent searches.
- Mute a community straight from a post's menu on All and Rising.
- A recommended discussion opens with a line above the post saying why it was suggested, and its menu has Not interested and Turn off.
- Muted videos in the feed no longer pause music or podcasts playing in another app.
- Swipe to vote now works on posts and comments in profiles.
- Community descriptions on Discover, and the post title above a comment on a profile, are translated into your language.
- On iPad, a post tapped in a list opens beside it, the selected row is clearly marked, and the Home title collapses as you scroll. New post sits in the sidebar, and Command-N opens the composer from a keyboard.
- A flair is never required to post or crosspost, and the composer says what one is.
- The All list in the community picker has every community, not only the biggest hundred.
- Before iOS asks to send notifications, Topicle explains what they are for.
- Signed out, the comment bar has a Sign up button, and a post saved from the share sheet opens as soon as sign-up finishes.
- Tap a tab you're already on to jump to the top, and again to reload; on Search it opens the keyboard. Communities have Reload in their menu, and the menu button stays in the bar as you scroll.
- Notification types stay reachable with push notifications off. Sending a bug report shows a Sending indicator, and a screenshot over the size limit is shrunk instead of refused.
- Logging out confirms with a Signed out message, and an empty community offers Create post under "No posts yet".
- The note about posts in other languages arriving translated now appears once per account, not again after every reinstall.
Fixed
- Closing the app from the app switcher no longer signs you out.
- Sending a reply no longer leaves the comment box stuck.
- When an image you upload for your profile or a community needs a review before it goes live, the app says so instead of seeming to do nothing, and your current image stays up until then.
- A video left paused in the background plays again when you come back, instead of freezing.
- Pages in the article reader no longer slide under the bars at the top and bottom on some sites.
- A vote on a post shows on its thread straight away, and feed posts show the thread's up-to-date comment count after you open it.
- Links to topicle.com and www.topicle.com open in the app instead of a browser page.
- Message previews in the inbox show plain text instead of formatting symbols.
- Typing t/ in the community picker's Subscribed filter no longer hides your communities.
Android 1.4.5
New
- Topicle is dressed up for Halloween until 2 November, with seasonal colours and a few decorations. Tap Turn off on its card, or switch off Seasonal themes in Settings.
- New members get a short Get started list in their home feed: upvote something and leave a comment, and if you like, edit your profile and make your first post.
- Tap anywhere on a comment to collapse it and its replies, and tap again to expand. Long press a comment for Select text. You can turn this off in Settings with Tap comment to collapse.
- A Next comment button in threads jumps to the next top-level comment. Long press it to go back one.
- Moderators can schedule posts in their community, once or on a repeat such as every Monday, from Mod Tools.
- Opening the app for the first time can show a welcome with quick ways to sign up, or you can browse first. If you are not signed in, a Join tab and a card in the feed make joining one step away.
Improved
- Comments are easier to read, with their lines set a little closer together.
- Before Android asks to send notifications, Topicle explains what they are for.
- On a phone held sideways, a community page's bar scrolls out of the way as you read.
Fixed
- Community milestone, weekly update and new member notifications show their own icons instead of a warning sign.
Android 1.4.4
New
- Customize your inbox: put a kind of notification in a folder at the top of Notifications, or hide it completely. Long-press a notification to choose, or go to Settings > Notifications > Customize inbox.
Improved
- When you reply to a comment, it stays in view above the composer and is highlighted while you write.
- The comment composer sits clear of the keyboard and its formatting buttons line up with your text.
- Turning your phone sideways gives a slim icon rail instead of the tablet layout, and in a thread the comment bar floats and tucks away as you scroll.
- A recommended discussion opens with a line above the post saying why it was suggested, and its menu has Not interested and Turn off.
- A flair is never required to post or crosspost, and the composer says what one is.
- Signed out, the comment bar has a Sign up button, and the comment box opens again once you have signed in.
Fixed
- The first swipe after going back from a post scrolls the feed, instead of being lost or opening the menu.
- Fullscreen video fills the whole screen in landscape, and turning the phone no longer closes it.
- Home no longer gets stuck showing a single post without loading more.
- Fixed a crash on the feed with an accessibility service such as TalkBack, Select to Speak or Voice Access turned on.
- In landscape, a community's name and Join button no longer sit under the buttons at the top of its page.
- Apple News links are no longer flagged as suspicious.
iOS 1.2
New
- Topicle is now in German, Italian and Simplified Chinese, with Australian and British English spelling where your device asks for it. You can pick a different language for Topicle alone in the iOS Settings app.
- Ask Siri to open your inbox, start a post, search Topicle or open a community, and use the same actions in Shortcuts. Posts you have read appear in Spotlight, and private content never does. Starting a post never publishes it until you tap Post.
- Add an optional display name to your profile, in any script. Bylines show it as Name u/handle, and your handle stays the same.
- Change your username from Settings once your account is eligible. Your posts, comments and messages come with you.
- Rising, a feed of fresh posts from real people, as a feed choice and as a rail on Home.
- Attach a photo to a direct message. It shows as its own tile in the conversation and opens full screen.
- Save an image, GIF or video from a post to your photo library from the post's menu, with progress you can cancel.
- Midnight, a pure black dark appearance for OLED screens, behind a switch under the theme control.
- A new app icon for Liquid Glass, with Dark, Clear and Tinted versions.
- Occasional recommended discussions arrive as quiet notifications, and can be turned off in Settings > Notifications.
- Swipe right on a notification to mark it read.
- Favourite a community from its page, and copy a comment's text.
- Attach up to four screenshots to a bug report.
- For moderators: a red dot on the menu button when a community you moderate needs you, a Manage community strip that goes straight to the mod hub, a setup checklist for a new community, and a default post type the composer opens to.
Improved
- The home feed, community pages, comment threads and profiles are rebuilt on native scrolling, so long threads and image-heavy feeds stay smooth at 120 Hz.
- Direct message notifications show the sender's name and picture, group by conversation, count as a person for Focus, and have Mark as read beside Reply.
- The composer is redesigned: post type and the title-length ring moved out of the crowded bar, so Flair, Spoiler and the other toggles keep their labels. Reorder gallery photos without dragging, paste a link you just copied with one tap, post with Command-Return on a hardware keyboard, and see why a link was flagged.
- Video uploads ride out slow networks and a busy server, and an upload the server is still finishing is never cancelled.
- Message threads, sign-in and account screens are covered in the app switcher, notifications you read elsewhere clear themselves, and drafts are cleared when you sign out.
- Signed-out visitors start on Popular, and Discover keeps loading instead of running dry.
- A home feed with nothing in it yet points you to communities worth joining.
- A reply that is only a photo shows a preview in its notification, and a mention in a post notifies you the same way a mention in a comment does.
- Autoplay GIFs in comments is a Feed setting beside the video one, and swipe to vote can be turned off in General settings.
- Flairs are translated too, and Not now on the translation explainer only closes it.
- Moderation links open in the app, the mod hub loads all its counts at once, and pending access requests stay visible until they are resolved.
- A conversation opens at its latest message, and signing out asks first.
- Recent searches remember what you opened, and search highlights your matches. Your user tags show in comment threads.
- The home feed runs under a clear bar with a thin glass fade behind the status bar, the photo viewer's Close is at the top left, and tapping the new posts banner reloads the rails with the feed.
Fixed
- On iPadOS 27 the bar controls, rails, profile cover and rows are fixed for the new system, and the faster feed runs at iPad widths too.
- Saving an edit no longer overwrites a newer change made in the meantime.
- Notification headlines read as whole sentences in every language.
Android 1.4.3
New
- Coming back to a thread shows what is new since your last visit: a header counts the new comments, New shows only those, and a button steps you through them one at a time.
- Swipe a conversation in Messages: right to mark it read, left to archive it, with Undo. Archived conversations are in the menu at the top of Messages.
- Mute a community straight from a post's menu on All and Rising.
- Show people's location flags beside their names in threads, under Settings > Appearance. A post's menu also shows where its commenters are from.
- When you come back to Topicle, posts you have already scrolled past on Home move further down, so there is something new at the top. A post with new replies keeps its place and nothing is hidden. Turn it off with Move seen posts down, under Settings > Content & feed.
- If you downloaded the app from topicle.com, a banner on Home tells you when an update is out, and from this version updates can install in the app with one tap once you allow it.
Improved
- Your messages load instantly and conversations you have opened can be read offline. A message still sending when the app closed or the connection dropped goes out once you are back.
- Archiving a conversation hides it from your inbox only, not the other person's, and a new message brings it back.
- Opening a comment from a notification or a link marks it with a blue stripe that stays, instead of a brief flash.
- Opening a conversation shows its name and the message box straight away while it loads, and the message box matches the comment bar.
- Community descriptions on Discover are translated into your language, as on the website.
- An empty community offers Create post under "No posts yet".
- The note about posts in other languages arriving translated now appears once per account, not again after every reinstall.
Fixed
- Links to topicle.com and www.topicle.com open in the app instead of a browser page.
- Message previews in the inbox show plain text instead of formatting symbols.
- The time on a message no longer makes long messages narrower.
- Feed posts show the thread's up-to-date comment count after you open it.
- The tabs above a post's comments fit beside the sort button, so their counts are no longer cut off.
Android 1.4.2
New
- Topicle is in the share sheet. Share a link or some text from another app to start a post with it.
- Your communities appear in the share sheet too, so a link can go straight into a post in one of them.
- Select text in another app and choose Topicle from its menu to start a post with that text.
- Long-press the Topicle app icon for Create post, Inbox and Search.
- You can select and copy the text of post titles, posts and comments. Long-pressing a link now selects it instead of opening it.
- A new sort, Active, puts threads with new replies at the top.
Improved
- Your Home feed, your feed sorts and your comment sort are saved to your account instead of only on this phone.
- Message notifications show the sender's name and picture, and sit with your other conversations in the notification shade.
- Videos in the feed get along better with music and podcasts. When another app starts playing, a feed video carries on without sound, and coming back to Topicle does not interrupt what you are listening to.
- Changing the sort takes the Home feed back to the top.
Fixed
- Signing in to finish a post no longer drops you back on the feed when the app switches to your account's language.
- The comment sort menu opens at full height, so Oldest is no longer hidden behind the navigation bar.
- Status bar icons in Mod Tools are readable again after opening a profile or community with a cover image.
- In the moderator log, a long username moves to its own line instead of breaking after "u/".
- The typing indicator in messages no longer blinks off while the other person is still typing.
- Reactions on a photo in a message now sit under the photo.
Android 1.4.1
New
- Polls can have up to ten options. In the feed, a poll with seven or more options shows the first few, and one tap opens the rest.
- Community owners can choose whether their community's former names are shown. Turn off Show former names under Mod Tools > Settings > Community name, and the old name is removed from the community page and the public moderation log.
- With former names hidden, an owner can also stop the old address from redirecting to the community. This can't be undone.
Improved
- After a name change, the Community name screen shows the current name, when it can next be changed, and what happens to the old name and when.
- Swiping a notification in the inbox needs a longer swipe, and the row shows when letting go will act, so a small flick no longer clears one by accident.
Fixed
- Opening Add tag or Edit tag no longer closes the app, and every tag colour can be picked on smaller phones.
- A new 7-day poll no longer says "8 days left".
- Typing a poll option no longer drops a letter, and the option you are typing stays fully visible above the keyboard.
- TalkBack reads each poll option once, not twice.
- The "Formerly" line on a renamed community's page no longer disappears as you scroll through its posts.
- Fixed a crash when opening the app on a small number of Android 14 devices.
Android 1.4
New
- Polls: add a poll to any post, with two to four options. Choose how long it stays open and whether results show after voting or when it closes.
- Tap an option to vote, and change your vote any time until the poll closes. Results appear after five votes and vote counts after twenty, so a few early votes don't give the game away.
- If you made the poll, you always see the vote counts, you can end it early, and you get a notification when it closes.
- Commenting on a poll? Turn on Show my vote and people see your pick next to your comment.
- Moderators can turn polls off for their community, let only members vote, and set the longest a poll can run.
- Community owners can change their community's name, once every 180 days. Links to the old name redirect to the new one for 12 months, and the community page shows the name it used to have.
- For Chinese-language users: download a Chinese font for the app, Noto Sans SC or Noto Serif SC, under Settings > Appearance > Chinese font.
Improved
- In the Compact layout, a poll shows as a chip on the post's row. Tap it to open the poll right there.
- DM drafts added: a message you haven't sent yet is kept when you leave the conversation, ready for when you come back.
- If you create a community with a name very close to an existing one, those communities are shown first, so you can consider joining one instead.
- A community's member count updates as soon as you join or leave.
- A community you create appears in Mod Tools straight away, and Mod Tools in the side menu shows each community's icon.
Fixed
- The vote button on feed posts is the same height as the comment button at every text size.
Android 1.3.10
New
- React to a message: long-press it and pick an emoji, or double-tap it for a thumbs up. Tap a reaction to see who reacted.
- Reply to a particular message: swipe it, or long-press it and choose Reply. Your reply quotes it, and tapping the quote takes you back to the original.
- Background video uploads: once you post a video or a video comment, the upload carries on without interruption if you leave the composer, move to another screen or switch away from the app, with its progress in a notification.
- Moderators can now see who has posted or commented in their community, under Members in Mod Tools. Members known to be under 18 are never listed. If you'd rather not appear, turn off Show me in community member lists in Edit profile.
- Make All your home feed: pick it in the Display options and Topicle opens on it every time.
- A new Open links in browser setting (Settings > General > Links) sends links in posts and comments to your browser, or the app that handles them, instead of the in-app reader.
- Community descriptions support formatting: bold, italics, links, lists and spoilers. Moderators get a description editor with a preview.
- Moderators can pick a cover colour for their community.
- Moderators can upload an SVG or a transparent image as the community icon, with fit, fill and background choices.
- Swipe to vote now works on posts and comments in profiles.
Improved
- The tab bar stays at the bottom of the screen as you move through the app, not only on the main tabs.
- Messages, the new message screen and moderator screens show people's real profile pictures, and @mentions in the composer show the person's or community's picture.
- In a message thread, tap the name at the top to open their profile. Long-press a conversation in the inbox for its actions.
- In Mod Tools, each conversation in Modmail now shows the name and profile picture of the person who wrote in, instead of the community's name on every row.
- Links in your own messages are underlined, so they stand out from the text.
- Text size now has its own screen under Settings > Appearance.
- Your own profile has a share button in place of a one-item menu.
- Card and Compact sit at the top of the Display options, so they are always in view.
- Crossposts take up less of the screen: the large embedded box is replaced by a short header saying where the post came from, and the title is no longer shown twice.
- Editing a crosspost changes only its title, flair and spoiler; its text and media belong to the original.
Fixed
- Articles that don't set their own background no longer show dark text on a black page in dark mode.
Android 1.3.9
New
- A new Text size setting in Appearance, with five steps from Smallest to Largest, applied on top of your phone's own font size.
- On a post with several images, swipe through them right in the thread, without opening the full-screen viewer first.
- On Android 12 and later, reply to a comment straight from its notification in your phone's notification shade, without opening the app.
- Messages you send from another device now appear in your open conversations straight away.
- Video posts can now have their thumbnail cropped or replaced.
- Upvote notifications for your posts and comments in private communities, with their own Upvotes channel: open Upvoted by to see who, and mute them for any post or comment. Only you can see who upvoted you.
- Coming soon: moderators of public communities will be able to see who has joined, under Members in Mod Tools. If you'd rather not appear, turn off Show me in community member lists in Edit profile.
Improved
- When you tap into the middle of your text to add something, the text and cursor stay visible above the keyboard.
- In the inbox, swipe a notification to the right to mark it read, replies that are only a picture show a preview of it, and new notifications appear without a refresh.
- Notifications for a mention in a post now say so, instead of reading as a mention in a comment.
- An empty home feed now says why, with shortcuts to find communities or browse all posts.
- Sending a bug report shows a Sending indicator, and a screenshot over the size limit is shrunk instead of refused.
- If you use a larger font size on your phone or in the app, profiles show their stats in three columns again, and community headers, community buttons and Translate links no longer get cut off or break mid-word.
- Opening an 18+ community always leads back to it after you sign in or confirm your age.
Fixed
- A slow connection no longer sends a bug report twice.
- A video left paused in the background plays again when you come back, instead of freezing.
- The tabs on a post line up with the edge of the screen in every language.
- On Wi-Fi networks where one connection route fails, the app now tries another at once instead of waiting.
Android 1.3.8
New
- Messages you send appear in the conversation straight away, with a sending indicator. A message that fails to send stays in the thread with a Retry button, and retrying never sends it twice.
- Photos in direct messages now appear as their own tile under the message. The space is sized before the photo loads, and tall photos get a Full image button.
- The photo viewer in messages shows who sent the photo and when, with Share in its menu.
- Moderators can set a default post type for their community, and the post composer opens to it.
- Bug reports can include up to four screenshots.
- Swipe to vote can now be turned off, in Settings under General and Gestures.
- A new Tab bar labels switch in Appearance: turn it off to show icons only.
- A new setting to autoplay GIFs in comments, next to the video autoplay setting.
Improved
- On narrow screens and with large text, the buttons under a post tighten up so the vote counts and view count stay on one line, instead of being cut off or stacked.
- With large text, the view count moves under the buttons instead of breaking, a post's age is never cut off, profile stats no longer clip, and the letter in an avatar circle stays inside the circle.
- The photo button in the message composer is quieter, so Send stands out.
- With auto-translate on, inbox notifications and the Discussions and Crossposts tabs show translated text.
- The tabs on a post scroll sideways instead of wrapping onto two lines.
- In search, choosing Show on the 18+ results is remembered, and that section's heading no longer wraps.
- The 18+ prompt names the Content & feed setting it turns on.
Fixed
- Swiping back with the side menu open now closes the menu instead of leaving the app.
- Posts written in your own language no longer show their titles translated into English.
- Translate now works on a community's title, description and rules, and on profile bios.
- A community that requires flair but has none set up no longer blocks posting.
